Youth and Family Ministry Update

Youth Education Services Director and Assistant

Karen Custer, our YES Director has a background in community organizing and coordinating, as evidenced by her support of UCNI’s main outreach program, Family Promise.  Karen has been a member of UCNI for eleven years.  She has served on our Board of Trustees in the capacity of treasurer for 3 years and was re-elected for another term in May.  Alas, Spirit has other plans in store for Karen.  Karen is married to Linden and they are the proud parents of Sita who is a member of Uniteens.

HAPPENINGS

FEBRUARY. In February, The Uniteens and Sunday school kids will be writing a Valentine to God. This will help them to focus on the good things God has given us. The Y.O.U. will be working to overcome hunger in a third world country with the 2012, 30 Hours of Famine event February 24-25. They are raising money to send to a country where famine is epidemic. Please support their efforts by making a donation during February.

MARCH. On March 11th, during both services, we will be celebrating St. Patrick’s Day by holding our annual St. Patty’s Pokey Event. This is where several key people within the church are held in a prison cell until all your change is collected by the  youth. An amusing fundraiser for the 2012 Unity Camps for our youth. Watch out, you may be selected!

APRIL. That brings us to April and Easter Sunday, which is April 8th. We’re asking for your colored plastic Easter eggs and candy to fill them with. The youth will be holding its annual Easter Egg Hunt. Our church family plants the seeds of love wherever it goes. The seedlings are our youth. Our teachers love and support our youth, an important part of their mission.

Youth And Family Ministries Looking For Teachers

We’re in search of a few talented teachers for our YFM Sunday school kids. We’re in need of 2 teachers and 2 assistants. Uniteens are looking for 2 leaders and 3 assistants. Y.O.U. needs 2 or more sponsors.

Our Sunday School curriculum is called Celebrating my God Self. It’s an easy to follow book with weekly lessons, an affirmation and easy to do crafts. It takes less than an hour to prepare.

Uniteens, ages 11-13 will be studying Eye of the Storm for Teens. Teens benefit from learning how to embrace conflict and create peace. This curriculum will help teens successfully navigate the challenging years ahead as they work through peer pressure, school pressures, and biological changes.

Y.O.U., ages 14-18, will have a challenging year as they study World religions. As a youth led class, each student will be responsible for selecting a religion and weighing it against Unity belief. Some of the religions selected are Hinduism, Buddhism, Native American/Wiccan, and Islam.

No experience is necessary! Each group, with the exception of Y.O.U., comes complete with an assigned curriculum that has easy to follow directions, including a Sunday affirmation. Your commitment level could be 1 or 2 Sundays a month and about an hour of preparation.

Requirements are a love for kids and teens and a passion for Unity. If this is for you, please contact the YFM Director, Karen Custer or stop by the Ark or Y.O.U. room and say Hi. We welcome you
