The Joy of Service

Synopsis: All the great religions sing the praises of generosity, and the joy of service. Service is both a means to awakening and an expression of awakening. Bring your friends this Sunday as we explore ways to be of even greater service to the world. Open hearted giving is a skill that can be cultivated. More importantly, this unselfish action will deepen your spiritual life.

"I slept and dreamt that life was joy. I awoke and saw that life was service. I acted and behold, service was joy." -- Rabindranath Tagore
Presented by: Reverend Michael Moran
With music by: Aaron English and Elizabeth Hareza

Buddha, Rabbi Jesus, and Mohammed each emphasized the principle that: “It is more blessed to give than to receive.” In fact, all the great religions sing the praises of generosity and the joy of service. However, generosity matures as we mature. It becomes more than an externally imposed obligation. In fact, generosity moves from burden to delight. For example, there is a Hindu saying which states: "When I am deeply ignorant of who I am, I manipulate you. When I'm a little less ignorant, I seek a good deal with you. When I'm beginning to awaken, I serve you. When I truly know who I am, I am you." Another example of this principle is captured in a quote by Rabindranath Tagore. Tagore was a late 17th century Bengali author. Tagore wrote: "I slept and dreamt that life was joy. I awoke and saw that life was service. I acted and behold, service was joy."
