TAKEAWAYS: On Memorial Day in the Spirit of Oneness, we honor the many faces and names of those who have served their country, given their lives and those teachers, friends, and family members who have blessed us in many, many ways on our own journey while they were alive.
Memorial Day. Thinking about it conjures up memories of going to local cemeteries with my family where we would visit each relative’s grave placing upon it the flowers my mother had so lovingly selected. Often, we’d spend the entire day traveling from Kellogg to Spokane and sometimes on to Odessa, WA where my father’s parents are buried. It was a yearly ritual, a ceremony I could count on. When at the grave, mother would clear away the grass and debris that may have gathered over the flat marble headstones. I was touched by her care.
Nowadays I don’t keep up this Memorial Day tradition as regularly as my parents did. Depending upon my schedule, I will however, visit our family graves. There is something about it that comforts me. The ritual links me to a lineage of belonging which is a basic primal need for we humans.
This Sunday we will provide an opportunity for each of us to remember those who have died in military service to our country, along with honoring others who are no longer with us. Rev. Jeni St. Claire and I will lead a special service commemorating Memorial Day with exceptional music, including taps by Michael Harrison (recently featured in CDA Press) accompanied by his wife Melody.
In addition, our music director Gwen has selected a medley of songs from the various branches of the armed services. Our music team includes Jim Turner, Dagan Williamson, and song leader Lisa Sherman.
You will be moved and touched by this heart centered service. Be with us.
Blessings of gratitude, generosity and grace,
