FEATURED MUSICIAN: Deidre Ashmore with Louise Butler
TAKEAWAYS: Freedom can be found in detachment of non-attachment. Detachment is being detached from one’s thoughts. It is to separate oneself from one’s own thoughts and opinions so as not to be harmed mentally and emotionally by them.
Our July lessons are focused around Spiritual Freedom. This Sunday I’ll be speaking on the idea of Freedom of Detachment. Detachment is a Buddhist teaching. How is it detachment brings freedom?
As I reflect upon detachment, I believe detachment assists us in not being disappointed when our expectations have not been met. So what do we do, when we are disappointed? Do we lower our expectations? Do we expect less? I believe there is another way.
The disappointment comes from my attachment to a specific outcome. In other words, life has to look, feel and be a certain way for me to be happy.
I’ve noticed however, that this is quite often — very often not the case! Detachment helps us stay in the now moment, which is what letting go of outcomes is all about. It doesn’t mean I don’t hold out for the highest and best — which is faith. Rather it means I expect the best, and allow for what is. I let go as soon as possible to a thought that will take me on a downward spiral of dissatisfaction, anger, judgement and condemnation. Whew! Glad I escaped that… Smile with me. It takes a lot of energy to be unyielding and rigid.
Musicians with us this Sunday are our music director Gwen Gathercoal, along with Nate Parker on drums and Gary Edwards on Bass accompanied by song leaders Lisa Siri-Sherman, Mark Soss and Laura Wineteer.
In addition I will play two cello pieces accompanied by my cello teacher, Louise Butler who plays in the Spokane Symphony.
Let us keep traveling deeper into spiritual principles that free us and provide a way to Be the living breathing Expression of the Divine now and always!
Blessings of summer peace, love and joy,
