The Antidote to Addiction
SYNOPSIS: This week, we will study the underlying cause of addiction. Is it the need to fill an inner longing? What is this longing? Christopher Papadopoulos, author of PEACE and Where to Find It, says the ultimate cause of addiction is our need to feel God.
FEATURED MUSICIAN: Carolyn Cruso
TAKEAWAYS: All addiction is the need to feel God, says Papaeopoulous. I believe this is true. We want to feel our true self. There is a way out of addiction — it is called present moment awareness — one must be willing to stop, to quit — and then develop spiritual connection - stay present.
If I were to ask 'What is the underlying cause of addiction?' One might say, 'The need to fill an inner longing.' What is this longing? Christopher Papadopoulos, author ofPEACE and Where to Find It, says the ultimate cause of addiction is our need to feelGod. This certainly has been my experience.
Sunday I’ll share the antidote to addiction. I stopped drinking alcohol 28 years ago this month. Thank goodness! Those of us who are addicts understand the insatiable need to fill ourselves with whatever is at hand — sugar, food, drugs, alcohol, sex, exercise, money. The inner sense is there is never enough of whatever it is we’re craving. And, if we just get more of it we will feel better. We live from driven behavior. It is crazy making and the very thing we want — to FEEL God, becomes more and more distant.
There is a way out, however. It is called the present moment. Or present moment awareness.
Our featured guest musician is Carolyn Cruso. Carolyn is an accomplished hammered dulcimer musician who is on tour from the San Juan Islands. In addition to providing the music during the Sunday services, she’ll give a concert at 1 p.m. following our Friendship Sunday potluck. Check her out.
Joining Carolyn is our music director Gwen Gathercoal, Melody Harrison on piano,
Dagan Williamson on drums and song leaders; Mark Soss, Rob Rohlmeier and Lisa Siri-Sherman.
Come and join us. Together we are growing a loving community as we inspire and empower transformation, creating a world that works for all.
