The soul and the spirit…

The terms soul and spirit are often used interchangeably but they have distinct differences. The word spirit refers to the immaterial facet of humanity that acts as a divine conduit to God. Whereas the soul, in its most basic sense, refers to the life essence of the body that persists beyond physical death.

Put another way, the soul is the essence of what makes you a human being; it is who you are. While the spirit is the immaterial part of your humanity that maintains your connection with God.

A useful analogy is to think of the soul as the passenger in the vehicle that is your human body. It plays a role on your journey that is dramatically different than that of the spirit. In other words, the soul takes the human trip, while the spirit serves as your navigator and coach.
