Sunday Lesson

lesson exploring the elements of Yoga that help you make peace with yourself and others.

Yoga is the union of the mind, body, and spirit. In Western society, there is a common misconception that yoga is solely a form of physical exercise. In truth, yoga is an 8-limbed path which helps practitioners reach enlightenment. The first two limbs of yoga are called the Yamas and the Niyamas.

The Yamas and Niyamas are ethical guidelines on making peace with the world and peace with yourself. Think of them as the ten commandments of yoga. These commandments act as a map, written to guide you on your life’s journey. Simply put, Yamas are things not to do. In other words, they serve as your restraints and your personal integrity with others. Niyamas, on the other hand, are things to do such as your observances and personal habits that honor yourself. Taken together, they form a moral code of conduct that leads you closure to embracing the true nature of your Divine Oneness.
